SECOND TO LAST: Texas crowned 2nd worst state to live in
Texas ranks near the bottom in quality of life according to a CNBC study. Out of the best places to live, the Lone Star state was 49th out of 50 – Arizona took the dubious crown in 50th place. Child and health care, the environment, crime, and discrimination were all factors that earned the Republican-controlled state an “F” grade.
“Quality of life was given ‘particular attention’ in this year’s study and considered factors like crime rates, environmental quality and health care. For the first time in 2022, the availability of childcare was also a factor. The inclusiveness of state laws, including protections against discrimination and voting rights, was also among the factors,” the study stated.
Coined the “second worst state to live in,” Texas missed the mark on every quality of life scale. Out of 10 categories across nearly 100 metrics, Texas landed near the bottom.
There has been an influx of residents moving from states like California in search of a new and less expensive life, but the transplants are finding out the hard way that the grass isn’t always greener.
“Skilled workers are still flocking to Texas despite longstanding quality of life issues. When they arrive, they are finding limited childcare options, a stressed healthcare system with the highest rate of uninsured, new curbs on voting rights, and few protections against discrimination,” the study alos found.
While ranking in the top five for business, that is little consolation for the everyday working Texan. Without access to quality child care, education, and health care, that leaves a lot to be desired.
Affordable housing in Texas is shrinking, and nearly half of the state is out of homeownership’s grasp. A majority of renters pay more than 30% of their income on housing according to a study by the Kinder Institute at Rice University.
