CLOSING IN: Georgia DA goes after Michael Flynn and Newt Gingrich in election interference case

A presidential pardon won’t save Michael Flynn this time, as Atlanta’s District Attorney Fani Willis seeks to compel testimony from him, Newt Gingrich, and others in Trump’s orbit to get to the bottom of attempts to interfere in the 2020 election.

DA Willis isn’t giving the new list of interrogatees much time to weasel out of their obligations, either — she wants to speak to Gingrich, Flynn, and former White House lawyer Eric Herschmann by mid to late November, picking up the pace on the investigation after the midterm elections.

Flynn landed on Willis’ list through actions such as openly claiming on right-wing media during the time between Trump’s election loss and the January 6th culmination of efforts to overturn the outcome that the then-president had the power to send the military into swing states and force a redo of their elections, The Washington Post reports.

Flynn has continued to be a significant spreader of election disinformation since Trump left the White House, regularly speaking to crowds and even headlining a “ReAwaken America” tour that travels around the country holding events to spread propaganda.

Willis isn’t the first to seek testimony from Gingrich, either — as seen below, the House Select Committee on January 6th sought testimony from him for promoting false narratives about the election and presidential powers to alter the outcome.

Former White House attorney Herschmann, meanwhile, has already spoken to the House Select Committee, sharing inside information on the discussions that went on in the White House about how to keep Trump in power after his loss, and his testimony will likely be extremely valuable to the investigation in Georgia. He’s already shared openly about being contacted by “coup memo lawyer” John Eastman about the possibility of continuing to fight the outcome in Georgia, even after January 6th.

Despite the efforts of some of Trump’s closest allies to dodge interviews with the Fulton County DA, Fani Willis has shown herself very resourceful and capable, managing to even drag Rudy Giuliani in for questioning, despite his claims that medical issues prevented him from traveling. Others are still resisting — Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is still fighting to have his subpoena quashed, and there’s no word yet on whether Mark Meadows will testify willingly.

It’s yet to be seen whether Gingrich and Flynn will follow those examples and try to dodge their responsibility to testify — but Willis isn’t playing games, and she’s set her sights on these witnesses.
