HE FOUND OUT: Michigan MAGA plotter sentenced to four years in Whitmer kidnapping plot

A Michigan Trump supporter who was involved in a plot to kidnap Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in 2020 was sentenced to four years in prison on Thursday, federal prosecutors announced.

Kaleb Franks had pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiring to kidnap the Michigan governor and was facing life in prison. His sentence was reduced due to cooperating with authorities by testifying at two federal trials, according to a statement from the Justice Department.

FBI agents uncovered the plot in October 2020 where Franks and his co-conspirators planned to violently overthrow the state government and kidnap Whitmer. The men believed she and other elected officials were violating the U.S. Constitution with measures such as pandemic restrictions. Ty Garbin, who was the first person to plead guilty in the case, had his prison sentence reduced from 75 months to 30 months due to his cooperation at the trials.

Franks must also pay a $2,500 fine and will be placed under court supervision for three years following his release from federal prison, according to the DOJ. His co-defendants, Adam Fox and Barry Croft, will be sentenced in December.

Prosecutors also played secretly recorded audio from a 2020 meeting in the basement of a vacuum shop to show jurors how a paramilitary group was connected to the plot to kidnap Gov. Whitmer.

Whitmer is also facing a midterm challenge from Trump-backed “Ultra MAGA” candidate Tudor Dixon, who released a campaign video that seems to emulate the group who plotted against the incumbent Governor.

Polls are putting Whitmer at six points ahead of Dixon in the Michigan governor’s race, but that gap is expected to increase as Dixon’s campaign is failing to gain any ground in the crucial final weeks before the election.
