RUNOFF! Georgia Senate race sends Warnock and Walker to yet another showdown
The highly sought-after Georgia United States Senate seat will be empty just a little bit longer, with Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and his opponent, Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker failing to get the minimum 50% needed to win the race outright. Instead, the men will face off on December 6th to determine which one will be headed to the Capitol.
Though the runoff wasn’t unexpected – Warnock and Walker have been neck and neck for most of the race – it definitely comes as a disappointment for many Democratic voters.
Since clinching the GOP nomination, Walker has been a magnet for controversy. Aside from unintelligible and nonsensical comments on everything from abortion to climate change, recent revelations that the former NFL star fathered multiple children out of wedlock and allegedly urged – and paid for – various ex-girlfriends to get abortions, expose the habitual liar’s hypocrisy as well.
The party of family values dismissed Walker’s past, going all in supporting his candidacy. Focused on the seat, and funneling tens of millions of dollars into the Texas resident’s campaign.
The race has remained tight, despite a constant stream of headlines about Walker’s personal life, as conservative Georgians have rallied to the defense of the Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Georgia. National Republicans are putting up a fierce fight for the seat, which they need to win in order to gain control of the Senate, and in recent days, polls have shown voters concerned about the economy and crime moving toward the GOP.
Walker faced an uphill battle in 2020, going head to head with then-Senator Kelly Loeffler (R) who was appointed by Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp. Unlike his Democratic colleague, Senator Jon Ossoff, Warnock didn’t receive a full 6-year term. Forcing the Reverend to get on the campaign trail, almost immediately after taking office.
Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Warnock at a Georgia rally, criticizing Walker’s lack of experience and accusing the former University of Georgia Bulldog of being little more than a puppet for Donald Trump and the GOP. While Walker’s “handlers,” had their hands full trying to coral the inconsistent candidate, and keep him from going completely off the rails – Warnock’s campaign focused on the positive things the Senator has done for Georgia – and plans to do for the people.
66-year-old Georgia resident, Louis Johnson, was impressed with Warnock. Going to see the pastor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Ebenezer Baptist Church speak outside of Atlanta. Johnson wanted to feel Warnock’s vibe. He left feeling upbeat about the senator’s positive message, reported The Washington Post.
“It’s a breath of fresh air,” Johnson, 66, a technology consultant, said in the parking lot of the restaurant, where more than a dozen supporters were loudly chanting for Warnock as his campaign bus drove off. He’s got the demeanor of a winner,” he added. “He doesn’t act like, ‘I’ve got to belittle the guy next to me.’ And there’s some low-hanging fruit, you’ve got to admit … But instead he says, ‘No, I’m a pretty good guy on my own — and I just don’t need to go there.’ ”
