BAD EDUCATION: Texas teacher SHOCKS predominantly Black classroom with racist admission
A Texas teacher was placed on administrative leave after a cell phone video surfaced with him telling African-American students that he is a White supremacist. The educator calmly addressed his students, telling the middle schoolers “I’m ethnocentric, which means I think my race is the superior one.”
“I’m not racist though,” one teen responded. “I like all kinds.”
Another student, also Black, told his teacher that “I actually respected you for a while, but now I don’t got no more respect for you.”
Bohls Middle School is located approximately 20 miles outside of Austin, TX in the suburb of Pflugerville.
The school’s principal, Dr. Sharon Churchin, released a statement after parents raised concerns about the teacher’s comments.
Dear Bohls Middle School families,
We are aware of an inappropriate conversation a teacher at Bohls Middle School had with students this week during an advisory class. This interaction does not align with our core beliefs as a district. The video of the conversation includes statements that we find wholly inappropriate. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave while Human Resources conducts an investigation.
Pflugerville ISD and Bohls MS work together to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for our students. The advisory activity was inappropriate, inaccurate, and unacceptable. This type of interaction will not be tolerated in PfISD schools.
Staff checked in with students today. Our counselors and administrators are always available if your student wants to discuss this situation further.
We always do our best to ensure the safety of all students; we encourage them to be self-advocates and let an adult know when something is wrong, as they did in this situation; this could be to a parent, a teacher, or a counselor. If you see something, say something.
Parents expressed their disappointment at the incident. One mother, Dr. Shante Lyons called it “disheartening.”
“I think the most disturbing piece is that it was a situation where kids had experienced this real-time,” said Lyons.
Brian Hennington, father of a BMS student condemned the statements, saying “this kind of thing should never happen in a school.”
“There are other personal experiences we’ve had a people of color that we had individually, but to see this in the classroom setting is just not acceptable,” said Hennington.
During his conversation with the students, the teacher doesn’t appear to believe he had said anything wrong, telling the class “I’m trying to be honest.” The unnamed educator went on to say, “I think everybody thinks that, they’re just not honest about it.”
“I was disgusted, traumatized. I felt for those children in that classroom,” mother Monique Hennington – whose son goes to the school – told KXAN’s Nabil Remadna.
The incident is currently under investigation.
