DEMS WIN! Will maintain control of the Senate after victory in Nevada

America’s first Latina senator, Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), pulled ahead of her opponent, former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, in dramatic fashion last night as more mail-in ballots were counted, leading the Associated Press to announce her as the projected winner and assuring that Democrats will stay in control of the Senate regardless of what happens in Georgia’s December 6 runoff.

The results were delayed in Nevada due to a dearth of election workers in some counties and a Nevada law stipulating that ballots sent by mail and postmarked on Election Day can be counted if they arrive up to four days later, which was Saturday. The mail-in ballots put Cortez Masto over the top.

The victory is another embarrassing loss for Trump and the Republicans. Laxalt was another one of the former president’s hand-picked loyalists. He not only co-chaired Dirty Donald’s reelection efforts in the state in 2020, but was also a strong proponent of the Big Lie, introducing several lawsuits – all dismissed – to try to discount ballots in Clark County.

Back in March, The New York Times reported that Laxalt was already thinking about how to challenge the election results should he lose. Unsurprisingly, he has yet to concede.

The race in Nevada was one of the most hotly contested in the country. According to OpenSecrets.org, Laxalt’s campaign raised over $15 million, and Cortez Masto’s more than $50 million. As Laxalt seemed to gain momentum in the closing days, the Democrats brought in some heavy hitters, with both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama stumping for Cortez Masto.

Ironically, even the late Harry Reid may have played a role.

While Republicans can still stop a great deal of legislation due to the antiquated and obstructionist filibuster, Democrats will now be able to approve federal judge appointments from the Biden administration, including any that might open up on the Supreme Court over the next couple of years. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has already announced his intention to fill two federal judgeships on Monday.

Almost as important – and perhaps equally gratifying to Democrats – the victory will likely continue to tear the GOP apart, as some within it are ready to move on from being the party of Trump and look to other figures, like the equally hateful — but perhaps more presentable — Ron DeSantis, to take the helm. Trump, after all, not only is largely responsible for the recent implosion but is under multiple investigations and fending off several lawsuits.

Trump was celebrating his daughter Tiffany’s wedding on Saturday. His joy was most likely short-lived, as Cortez Masto’s win undoubtedly served as a sign that his grip on the GOP just might be slipping.

Dirty Donald and Little Donny Jr certainly hate Ross. But you can like him! On Twitter! Where he appreciates your support. @RossRosenfeld
