SUDDEN NERVE: January 6th Committee scolds Mike Pence in scalding clapback

The January 6th Committee has some choice words for Mike Pence after the former Vice President criticized the handling of its investigation into the Capitol attack.

During an interview with CNN’s Margaret Brennan to promote his new book, So Help Me God, the ex-Veep said that the committee was created with a partisan agenda.

The Select Committee respectfully and resoundingly disagreed, tweeting:

“The Select Committee has proceeded respectfully and responsibly in our engagement with Vice President Pence. So, it is disappointing that he is misrepresenting the nature of our investigation while giving interviews to promote his new book.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) gave Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) multiple opportunities to nominate members of the Republican Caucus, but with 147 members voting against certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win, the pickings were slim.

“McCarthy had the opportunity to nominate five members. Speaker Pelosi initially accepted three of those nominees and invited McCarthy to propose two others,” the committee wrote. “Rather than doing so, McCarthy refused to participate–so that he could make the false claim that the Committee was one-sided.”

Pence’s comments were not only misleading but untrue.

Over 50 Republican witnesses testified before the Jan. 6 committee, some included in the summer’s televised hearings.

On that list were former federal judge, and George H.W. Bush nominee, Michael Luttig, Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, as well Pence’s former Chief of Staff Marc Short, and attorney Greg Jacobs.

“This testimony, subject to criminal penalties for lying to Congress, was not ‘partisan,'” the panel wrote. “It was truthful.”

Pence was a central figure in the congressional investigation. Trump and his allies made aggressive efforts to pressure him to overturn or delay the electoral count but failed.

“The Select Committee has consistently praised the former Vice President’s refusal to bow to former President Trump’s pressure to illegally refuse to count electoral votes on January 6th,” it wrote. “But his recent statements about the Select Committee are not accurate.”

In other words, Pence lied.
