BETROTHED BIGOTRY: This Republican claims marriage act makes it legal for humans to wed animals

The Respect for Marriage Act in no way acknowledges or condones, or suggests any other entity should enter into a marriage in which one party cannot consent — such as where one party is not human, or not old enough to consent — but one Republican seems to think that it does, and made such claims in a vile anti-LGBTQ rant on the House floor.

Representative Bob Good (R-VA) is a member of the Freedom Caucus, but doesn’t seem to think that the definition of ‘freedom’ extends to include rights for LGBTQ Americans, as he argued that the legislation being passed to protect the right of two consenting adults to marry, regardless of gender, race, or national origin, is in defiance of God, and that his particular interpretation of his God’s definition of marriage is the only one that matters.

Good fell back on the ‘slippery slope’ fallacy, suggesting that this legislation will make it possible for Americans to marry animals, or to engage in child marriage, and will force the government and others to accept, condone, and acknowledge these marriages as legitimate.

Ironically, Republicans have repeatedly shut down legislation that would protect minors from being entered into marriages.

He even declared that the “failure” to follow (what he deems to be) “God’s law” regarding marriage — in context, he’s talking about the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision, which affirmed that outlawing same-sex marriage is a violation of the Constitution — is the cause of almost everything that is wrong in society today.

Good said, in part:

This bill certainly disrespects God’s definition of marriage, a definition that has served His creation well for more than 5,000 years of recorded history, and His definition is the only one that really matters. This bill would…ensure that the marriage laws in the most liberal states, irrespective of how radical they might become in the future, think polygamy, bestiality, child marriage, or whatever, must be legally recognized in all states.

The actual text of the legislation is available for anyone, including Representative Good, to read, and it is very clear on which characteristics cannot be used to deny equal marriage rights — see emphasis added in the quote below:

No person acting under color of State law may deny full faith and credit to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State pertaining to a marriage between 2 individuals, on the basis of the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of those individuals

It also explicitly states that “nonprofit religious organizations, including churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, nondenominational ministries, interdenominational and ecumenical organizations, mission organizations, faith-based social agencies, religious educational institutions, and nonprofit entities whose principal purpose is the study, practice, or advancement of religion,” as well as their employees, are protected in their right to discriminate based on their religious beliefs, and “shall not be required to provide services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods, or privileges for the solemnization or celebration of a marriage.”
