HOUSE PLANS: Kevin McCarthy weighs in on vengeful investigations of January 6th Committee

MAGA Republicans have been saying since before the election that if they took the House, they’d carry out vengeance investigations on entities from the January 6th Committee to Dr. Anthony Fauci, and now that they’ve won a majority of seats, the current House Leader, Kevin McCarthy, is answering questions about what happens next.

In January, the new Congress will be seated, and there will be elections for leadership roles, including House Speaker, elections in which McCarthy is facing challenges.

Despite being endorsed by former president Donald Trump, he doesn’t have much support from Team MAGA, and a promise to carry out punitive investigations of the January 6th Committee could increase his potential in their eyes.

However, when asked about this, and about whether he fears that he and some other Members of Congress and people close to Trump could face criminal referrals for refusing to testify before the Committee, McCarthy didn’t seem to be prepared with a specific plan.

Instead, he focused on the issue of criminal referrals, finally coming back to affirm that he’d want to “get to the bottom,” and that he wouldn’t “play politics like the Democrats.”

It may not be enough for Trump and his supporters, if they’re seeking full-fledged vengeance on the January 6th Committee for carrying out its investigation and revealing to the public just how egregious the attack on January 6th was, and just how much involvement the then-president and his allies had in the multi-pronged schemes to overturn the election.

Speaking at a press briefing, McCarthy gave the following non-answer:

“We’d want to get to the bottom. We’d want to not play politics, like the Democrats, to pick and choose. So, be interesting to see.”

He has already, as the Washington Post reported earlier this month, sent a letter to January 6th Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson warning him to preserve all records, and has said that the House, under his leadership, would investigate why the Capitol complex was not secure, but it’s doubtful he’d seek to continue or bolster the efforts the Committee made to investigate motivations and intents of the attackers.

Fortunately, those investigations are being carried on by the Department of Justice, and the Committee will release their full report this month, as well as any criminal referrals they may choose to issue.
