QUEEN SHERO: New documentary shows just how tough Nancy Pelosi really is

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi scares mediocre MAGA men, and I will always be here for that.

My eternal shero is profiled in an amazingly candid new documentary that gets us closer to the powerful Pelosi than anyone ever could, because it was directed by her eldest daughter, Alexandra Pelosi.

BOSS LADY

Pelosi in the House is a non-linear film that begins with the now-infamous moment from January 6th where the Speaker finds out that Trump can’t come to the Capitol as he threatened, and she says she wants to punch him in the face. “I’m gonna punch him out, and I’m gonna go to jail,” the Speaker says for all of us, “and I’m gonna be happy.”

Pelosi says early on in the film that she wasn’t “called” to a life of politics, but literally born to it: her father, Thomas D’Alesandro, was Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, and later served in Congress.

Nancy became the first daughter of a congressman to serve in Congress herself while raising five children with her husband, Paul Pelosi.

Watching Nancy’s rise to political power set off an array of feelings for me, because there were stark and shocking reminders of just how far the Republican Party has fallen.

Alexandra’s footage captures her mother becoming the first woman Speaker of the House in 2006 and the Republican Party cheering for her as vigorously as members of her own party, which is infuriating to watch now because we know how the party currently treats her.

It also follows the fight over Obamacare, where you can see a lot of angry white Republicans willingly spite-voting against healthcare for their own constituents because a Black man was the President.

Keep an eye out for John Boehner, who first champions Nancy Pelosi in her role as Speaker and then excoriates her once the fight over the Affordable Health Care Act begins.

Some of my favorite candid moments from the documentary include hearing our shero call Trump “insane,” “crazy,” “out of control,” and other things.

Both The Clap and the Rip from the two SOTU’s where she had to stand behind Trump are a joy to rewatch.

I also laughed when she muted a phone presentation from Mike Pence because, as she says, it’s “nothing,” so she does a bunch of household chores while he blathers on.

But then there’s that moment where I wish I could jump into the screen to tell her driver to turn the car around, because I knew what was coming as she happily chattered away on the phone to Chuck Schumer on the “great morning” of January 6th.

It’s still very hard for me to sit through footage of that day, even though I watched it all live.

Maybe because I watched it all live.

That feeling of violation never fully goes away.

To hear the MAGA terrorists screaming, “THIS IS OUR HOUSE!” while defecating on its floors. “Is that how you act at YOUR house?” I found myself yelling at my TV.

Nancy Pelosi’s strength that day is a masterclass in political leadership.

We see her angry, but never out of control, even with her grandsons nearby.

She is thinking about the country and refuses to let the day end without certifying Joe Biden as President.

“Then they win everything,” she says of Trump’s MAGAts who destroyed her office.

We see Nancy and Chuck Schumer making calls to get the National Guard to the Capitol when Trump did nothing.

There is that moment which was released ahead of the documentary where Nancy is worried for Mike Pence and remains calm while listening to him, opening some brand of meat stick with her teeth.

She then talks about wanting to hold Trump accountable and punch him out.

She is the first to say “This is insurrection.”

Sadly, I don’t think a single one of the Republicans who were in Congress pre-Trump will watch Pelosi in the House, because I don’t think they want to be reminded of how far they’ve fallen.

But every American of voting age should be required to watch it to be reminded of what our government and our country used to be, and could be again if we could only cleanse Congress of the MAGA filth.

Pelosi in the House is now streaming on HBO Max.
