OPINION: DeSantis failed Florida's children and veterans with his latest bad idea

As you know, Republicans love to use veterans and teachers as voting props to help with their campaigns and win over their constituents.

Six months ago, Ron DeSantis implemented a plan that would turn vets into teachers to help with the low numbers of teachers in the state of Florida.

The great part about this disaster of a plan–it failed (thus far).

Military News reported that as of December 14, a pitiful seven vets signed up for the ridiculous program.

As a veteran, I thought this could be a bad idea given some of the reasons why DeSantis wanted to hire veterans as teachers: security is one of them.

Yes, veterans are trained to use weapons, but around kids? So much could have gone wrong with that.

Veterans are capable of working in the civilian sector, but there is always a possibility that PTSD from combat can go off when it gets triggered.

If that were to ever happen, there could be fatal mistakes made.

Only a handful of veterans have signed up for this program, so time will tell how it goes.

The governor didn’t care to fix the actual problems teachers in Florida are facing and there are so many, starting with low wages.

Florida is ranked 48th in the country for schoolteacher pay, according to the National Education Association.

With nothing being done about that, why would any veteran apply for the job?

It’s as if veterans were just being used to fill spaces instead of doing the right thing by taking care of the teachers we already have.

The program hires vets who don’t even have the full teaching education experience that is required to be a teacher.

Bad idea.

We need competent and fully trained people to successfully teach our kids.

I am sick and tired of veterans and teachers being used as political pawns for a quick fix to help Republicans in their campaigns.
