PRESIDENTIAL UNFITNESS: Liz Cheney on why Trump is "unfit for any office"

In opening statements at the last meeting of the January 6th Committee, Vice Chair Liz Cheney explained that following his actions regarding the 2020 election, former president Donald Trump is not only unfit for the presidency, but for any office, ever.

The Committee began a meeting with the purpose of sharing final information with the public, and voting on criminal referrals.

Chairman Bennie Thompson opened with statements about the necessity to prevent there ever being a repeat of January 6th and the necessity for accountability as the ultimate measure to protect against a recurrence.

He handed the hearing over to Cheney, who will be leaving Congress after Trump supported a primary challenger against her for her role in the investigation.

Cheney described Trump’s behavior on January 6th, including the egregious hours of sitting and watching the attack on television while refusing to call off his mob.

Ultimately, Cheney concluded, Trump is not only unfit to be in the role of President again, but to hold any office.

This closely follows his supporters rallying for him to run for House Speaker when he teased a “major announcement” recently (which turned out to be internet pictures of Trump-themed cards).

Cheney laid out the horrors that took place during the time that Trump refused to act, including the destruction in the Capitol Building, the threats to the lives of legislators, and the abuse and assaults on police. She said:

“President Trump sat in the dining room, off the Oval Office, watching the violent riot at the Capitol on television for hours…in addition to being unlawful as described in our report, this was an utter moral failure and a clear dereliction of duty…No man who would behave that way, at that moment in time, can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again — he is unfit for any office.”

Aside from inciting the mob attack, Trump has been accused of involvement in a long list of other schemes, including a pressure campaign on his Vice President, Mike Pence and contacting election officials in several states to urge them to alter the outcomes of their states’ elections.
