DON’T TELL TRUMP: Republicans secretly side with Democrats on election legislation

Republicans secretly side with Democrats on election legislation

The Electoral Count Act (ECA) is poised to pass with bipartisan support. Nestled in a recently passed omnibus bill, the ECA will transform how elections are handled in the wake of the chaos following the 2020 election, and make it harder for anti-democratic powermongers to subvert the process.

After ex-President Donald Trump’s attempts to stage a coup, legislators on both sides of the aisle banded together in its wake.

Although those on the conservative side of the aisle tried to deflect from their agreement with Democrats on the need to reform the electoral process, it’s evident that the former President’s actions leading up to, and on, January 6th were the catalyst for initiating legislative action.

“Senate Republicans are poised to join Democrats in Trump-proofing our elections behind his back,” The Washington Post wrote.

GOP Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) claimed the legislation would “own the libs” by taking away their supposed plan to do away with the electoral college altogether and somehow prevent Madame Vice President Kamala Harris from “stealing” the 2024 election.

It appears Republicans are seeking to walk back their all-in approach to Trumpism, and pretend they weren’t complicit in ex-President Trump’s attempt to foment a coup.

Revelations that the former President pressured his second in command and members of congress to illegally block the counting of electoral votes raised a red flag among those in the legislature.

The realization that the country barely escaped the grip of fascism apparently sunk in.

According to The Washington Post, “The aim is to close off manipulation of the process and both the state and congressional ends.”

“This proposal effectively constrains both state officials ad Congress to count the true electors,” ECA expert, Matthew Seligman, told WaPo.

Trump’s actions have played a key role in congress’ re-examination of holes in the way elections have been previously handled. The Electoral Count Act clarifies any misguided belief that the Vice President holds more than a ceremonial role in counting free and fairly cast votes.

The 2024 election is just around the corner — and with Trump positioning himself at the forefront of the GOP nomination – time is of the essence. The Republicans know it and seem to be hedging their bets.
