If at first you don’t succeed, fail, fail again. That is what happened to loser House speaker hopeful Kevin McCarthy yesterday as, with twenty Republican holdouts still aligned against him, he was unable to secure enough votes to win the speakership.

But now he has an even bigger loser than him in his corner once more: Donald Trump, who seems to have reluctantly come around to supporting the man who so willingly enabled him as president.

One can suppose that McCarthy did just enough bootlicking again to please Dirty Donald, the Florida Guy now hosting media events that respectable media doesn’t bother to show up to.

During an interview with NBC Tuesday morning, Trump initially refused to say if he’d continue to support McCarthy, simply offering, “We’ll see what happens. We’ll see how it all works out.”

Trump may have still been sore about McCarthy’s efforts to censure (though not impeach) him after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

At the time, McCarthy said, “The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters.”

Yet, this morning Trump was back on the McCarthy bandwagon.

One is forced to wonder if some sort of “corrupt bargain” was reached in the interim, though no evidence other than the two men’s histories and personalities exists to justify that claim.

In two rambling tweets, Trump managed to show the petty, thin-skinned, egotistical racist loon that he is and slip in some support for McCarthy too – though, considering Trump’s record, it’s not clear how helpful that will be.

It also appears he doesn’t seem to understand that Nancy Pelosi isn’t done with politics: she’s still a representative, just no longer speaker, so she won’t be flying back anywhere.

Then there was this gem of an “endorsement” from him:

His stupidity aside, it’s worth noting that no one has a history of losing like Trump.

We see from his taxes that his businesses lose like nobody’s business.

He lost the popular vote (the only one that should count) to Hillary Clinton in 2016, and the whole shebang to Biden in 2020.

And many of his most prominent midterm candidates went on to ignominious defeat in the 2022 midterms, including Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, Arizona candidate for Senate and professional whack job Blake Masters, Arizona gubernatorial candidate (who will perhaps concede someday) Kari Lake, and Georgia candidate for Senate and fake sheriff Herschel Walker.

Well, now maybe he can help Kevin lose as well.

We’ll see: the next vote is at noon today.

As for Trump’s continued racist attacks against former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, both Chao and her husband, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have thus far decided it best not to respond so as not to amplify Trump’s racism.

It’s a frequent Trump trope to go after minorities for not being American enough; after all, he built his political career on accusing Barack Obama of being a secret foreigner.

Chao was born in Taiwan, but grew up in the US and went to Harvard.

Political disagreements aside, there is no question about her national loyalty.

McCarthy, being in the fight of his political life, is perhaps willing to overlook Trump’s racism and bigotry.

He’s already made some significant concessions to the Freedom Caucus hardliners, including lowering the requirements to bring a vote of no-confidence against the speaker.

He’s also agreed to not waive the rule requiring that bills be given to members of Congress at least 72 hours prior to a vote – one of the more reasonable requests that many Republicans and Democrats could actually agree on – though the language employed in the agreement makes it hardly concrete.

McCarthy is now evidently hoping that Trump’s endorsement will help him carry the day, despite all the drawbacks that Trump brings.

Time will tell.

Meanwhile, Ted Lieu can still enjoy it all with some more popcorn.

Kevin and Dirty Donald are definitely united on one thing: they hate Ross. But you can show him some love (and stay up-to-date on Republican liars) by following him on Twitter! @RossRosenfeld
