GOP HYPOCRISY: Watch Republican James Comer try to weasel his way out of this one

On Sunday, Representative James Comer (R-KY), the new chairman of the House Oversight Committee, offered one standard for investigating Joe Biden and quite another for former President Donald Trump.

Asked by Jake Tapper of CNN if his committee will be requesting visitor logs for Mar-a-Lago after sending a similar request to Joe Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, regarding Biden’s Delaware home, Comer said – or, more accurately, perhaps, admitted – that he would not.

“We are doing the Biden family influence-peddling investigation,” he answered.

Tapper pressed Comer on the double standard throughout the interview, playing a clip of Comer telling CNN in November that investigating would “not be a priority.”

Comer’s response was classic Republican downplaying: “I don’t feel like we need to spend a whole lot of time [investigating Trump] because the Democrats have done that for the past six years.”

Of course, unlike Joe Biden, who openly admitted the mistake and worked with the National Archives to recover the documents, Donald Trump’s legal team misled authorities and stonewalled, forcing the FBI to raid Mar-a-Lago in August.

Another key difference that Tapper pointed out is that Trump may have possessed as many as 300 classified documents.

Biden had somewhere around 15 or 20.

Comer claims he doesn’t trust the Biden lawyers’ figures. Yet he seems to have no compunctions about taking what Donald Trump says.

He won’t be getting any visitor logs anyhow, it seems: as it turns out, there were no visitor logs for Biden’s home, as the White House has now said.

We recently witnessed more GOP hypocrisy revealed in another interview: when Chuck Todd grilled Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) about why he seems so interested in Hunter Biden’s laptop but not at all interested in the deals Jared Kushner was making while working at the White House.

This past Thursday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy was even so bold as to suggest the new House GOP majority would consider expunging Trump’s impeachments – as if poor, innocent Donald never did anything wrong.

Meanwhile, GOP House members like Byron Donalds have repeatedly suggested impeaching Biden, even if he hasn’t done anything to warrant it.

It’s no surprise, of course, that Republicans have one set of standards for Democrats and another for Republicans.

If anything, the only surprise is that they’re not better at lying about it.

Say what you will about that worthless slime claiming to be a human being, Newt Gingrich – at least he knew how to organize an effective group of dissemblers.

Come on, Republicans – bring your A-game to the bullshit contest!

Tapper, for his part, deserves credit for not letting Comer just get away with it. Here’s the interaction:

The Kentucky rep’s reaction makes me think of something the founder of Kentucky, Daniel Boone, once said.

When asked if, in all his pioneering travels, he had ever been lost, Boone replied: “I can’t say I was ever lost, but I was once bewildered for about three days.”

Also bewildering is how people like Comer manage to look at themselves in the mirror each day.

James Comer will likely now want to add his name to the growing list of Republicans who would like to see Ross take a long walk off a short pier. But you can still have some laughs and get insights by clicking on @RossRosenfeld to join him on Twitter!
