BIGOT: Trump doubles down on transphobic extremism

Donald Trump has made it clear he doesn’t support equal access to care for the needs of transgender individuals, offering a frightening threat in his President’s Day speech: to shut down all transition care for people of all ages.

Recently, the Republican Party has been focusing on a few sub-demographics, including transgender athletes, and transgender minors.

They’re spreading lies about both, painting athletes as monstrous powerhouse men who are overtaking women’s sports, and trans kids as victims forced into genital surgeries behind their parents’ backs — even though the fact is, gender-affirming surgeries are done on bodies that have finished growing.

Trump isn’t stopping with kids, though — in a rambling promise, he first suggested that when (if) he’s president again, he’ll shut down all transitional care regardless of age, then said that he’ll prevent federal agencies from “promoting” the idea.

To bolster the idea that he can do this, he bragged about his ban of transgender individuals in the military, seeming unaware that President Biden reversed it his first week in office.

“Gender-affirming care,” Trump said, promising, “As soon as we get in, it’ll all be ended.”

Comparing his plan (to the extent that a bigoted rant can be called a plan) to his 2017 military rule, he boasted:

“You know, I ended it in the military…I ended it and the military was extremely happy.”

Biden reversed the discriminatory rule during his first week in office, saying:

“[T]his is reinstating a position that previous commanders and — as well as the Secretaries have supported.  And what I’m doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform, and essentially restoring the situation as it existed before, with transgender personnel, if qualified in every other way, can serve their government in the United States military.”

Trump’s most likely GOP contender, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has already implemented rules in his state preventing teachers from discussing gender with children, and Republicans across the nation are fighting to prevent gender-affirming care for children (gender-affirming care for children does not involve surgical transition, but counseling and sometimes hormone blockers, which are also prescribed to cisgender children for a number of conditions), and to prevent kids from finding adult allies.

They’re fighting to criminalize drag performances, and to force teachers to report to parents if there is any indication their child may be questioning sexuality or gender, even in cases where such a report might be dangerous or harmful to the child.

Now, the former president is promising that if he gets the opportunity, he’ll deny life-saving care to all transgender Americans, both minors and adults.
