MEH: CPAC straw poll could spell trouble for Donald Trump

Former president Donald Trump made a less-than-inspiring showing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday night, but the results of a straw poll just may be the nail in the insurrectionist’s presidential dreams coffin.

Controversy and low attendance have plagued the longtime bastion of conservative “values,” and the MAGA hopes that the ex-president could turn it around went down in flames.

According to sources, a poll taken at the hate-filled event showed Trump receiving only 62% of the vote.

While that may seem like a lot, some believe it spells trouble in paradise for the former president.

With a sparse crowd made up of mainly Trump supporters – the 38% of dissenters is a sign of the MAGA times.

“Sixty-two percent of CPAC in a straw poll it is a horrible result for Donald Trump,” GOP operative Susan Del Percio said on MSNBC’s The Alex Witt Show. “I mean, this has been dubbed TPAC; this is Donald Trump’s show, and you can only get 62% of the people,” she added.

But Trumpism is here to stay, and the legally plagued, failed businessman is banking on the numbers.

Roughly 35% of the GOP vote is all Trump needs to best his potential primary opponents – and that’s all that matters.

“Don’t overlook Donald Trump,” political analyst and former congressman David Jolly told an MSNBC panel. “He’s still the front-runner for the GOP nomination”

Jolly, a former representative from Florida and member of failed presidential candidate Andrew Yang’s newly formed Forward Party, raised caution at dismissing Trump’s political power within the Republican – or MAGA – party and his ability to disrupt the political, and democratic scheme.

“It’s just a room full of crazy people led by a crazy man,” the former congressman said.

Jolly also pointed out the mainstream media’s complicity in the insanity.

“He has reshaped the party in his image. However what we’re learning tonight is it’s still his party, and to just look at the numbers of CPAC being down, I think leads us into making the same mistake many of us made in 2016.”

As the GOP looks for a Trump escape route via Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, now is not the time to let the foot off the gas.

Trumpism is alive and well. While conservative centrist voters – and the establishment among the Republican Party – seek to distance themselves from the man that made it all possible, getting 62% of MAGA support is still way too much.
