PRESSURE: Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich calls for protests to demand new gun laws

Across the Republican party, the response to yet another mass shooting in a school has included attacking the transgender community, promising to do absolutely nothing, and suggesting that religion is the answer. One exception, former Ohio Governor John Kasich, stands out for doing exactly the opposite.

Kasich is calling for action and saying that the American people need to demand it from their elected representatives.

He even has some suggestions on exactly how to do that.

It’s time to stand up and protest, he says, taking the debate right to lawmakers.

While Kasich was in office, he fought for legislative reforms in Ohio, and he says that if he could have mobilized like-minded voters in the thousands, to hold vigils and protests on the lawn in front of the state house, he’d have been able to push them through.

He said that fighting for certain reasonable regulations would not diminish Second Amendment rights and that there are compromises that both sides of the gun debate can come together and agree on — but when it comes to getting them through Congress, it’s “going to take people marching in the streets” to get results.

“Until people start to go into the streets and protest, we’re not going to see the changes…if you don’t have the people rising up like what they did with civil rights…they’re going to keep passing the buck….this is about saving our children at this point…then you begin to put the pressure on the politicians,” Kasich explained.

Some of Kasich’s specific suggestions include waiting periods on gun purchases, limits on the purchase of clips, and eliminating specific weapons, including AR15s.

Kasich has made efforts on gun control before.

In 2018, he signed an executive order requiring certain protection orders and warrants to be uploaded into a database to help prevent the purchase of weapons by people ineligible to legally own them, according to Cleveland.com.

After a long record of fighting for gun rights, it was school shootings that prompted his reversal, The Dayton Daily News reported, as he turned to support for red flag laws, and even declared that one’s Second Amendment rights are not eroded “because you couldn’t buy a God-darn AR-15.”
