COMIC RELIEF: Biden, Colin Jost shine at White House Correspondents Dinner

The White House Correspondents Dinner is an annual event in which the press is invited to the White House to tell the current administration what they really think, wrapped in a humorous roast. This year though, one of the prime targets of the humor and mockery wasn’t present, because he’s the former president, rather than the current one.

On the other hand, Donald Trump didn’t show up at the White House Correspondents Dinner when he was President, either, and still griped about being the subject of jokes and negative comments. This time around, President Joe Biden joined in, using humor to call out the behaviors and personality traits that make his opponent regaining power a dangerous prospect.

Biden never ignores the elephant in the room, so he started off by addressing speculation about whether he and his only slightly younger opponent are fit to hold office again. He referred to Trump as “Sleepy Don,” mocking his predecessor’s rumored snoozing in court, and then added, “Age is an issue.” He explained:

“I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old!”

Biden had jokes about his own age, too — he declared that he’s been campaigning in North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, adding, “I’ve always done well in the original 13 colonies.”

He proceeded to mock Trump’s speech about Gettysburg, saying it was so embarrassing that the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered all over again. He also compared himself and Trump, pointing out that his own first-term Vice President is endorsing him for a second term — unlike Trump’s.

He joked that Trump is suffering “Stormy weather,” and said the former president had tried reading the Bibles he’s hawking but had to stop when he reached the first commandment which said, “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.”

Biden had a little shade to throw at Trump’s Congressional allies, too. Referencing one House Republican’s recent incident of public disgrace, he said:

“Folks think what’s going on in Congress is political theater. That’s not true. If Congress was a theater, they would’ve thrown out Lauren Boebert a long time ago.”

Saturday Night Live‘s Colin Jost started with age-related jokes, too, positing that there are no old photos of Biden because the technology didn’t exist when he was in high school. He quickly pivoted to Trump and his criminal charges, though. He said:

“Can we just acknowledge how refreshing it is to See a President of the United States at an event that doesn’t start with a bailiff saying ‘all rise’….Donald Trump has spent the past week falling alseep in court every morning, though Fox News said he was just being anti-woke.”

He opined that the current state of politics, particularly the 2024 election, is ridiculous. He said:

“The Republican candidate for president owes half a billion in fines for bank fraud and is currently spending his days farting himself awake during a porn star hush money trial and the race is tied? The race is tied. Nothing makes sense anymore.”

He also satirized Trump’s claim that Biden is the evil mastermind causing him to face consequences for (allegedly) criminal acts. He joked that Biden must be exhausted from not only orchestrating multiple criminal trials, but rigging the Super Bowl (another MAGA claim), and “gearing up to steal a second election.”

Jost didn’t leave out the third-party candidate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He suggested that the conspiracy theorist’s vaccine card also predicts his presidential chances: he doesn’t have a shot.

Even Jost had to get serious at the end, though, echoing the same sentiment that surfaced at the end of Howard Stern’s interview with Biden: the simple appreciation for a decent human being in office. He said:

“My grandfather, a Staten Island firefighter, voted for you Mr. President. He voted for you in the last election that he ever voted in…and the reason that he voted for you is because you’re a decent man. My grandpa voted for decency.”

Let’s hope that Biden is re-elected in November, because if Trump makes it back into office, there may be no White House correspondents to hold a dinner next year.
